How to Choose the Right Atoll for Your Maldives Holiday
Speedboat or seaplane? Lively or secluded? A short guide to matching the atoll to the holiday you have in mind.

The Maldives is made up of 1,192 islands grouped into 26 natural atolls, and where you stay shapes your holiday as much as which resort you choose. Here is how our team thinks about it.
Start with the transfer
Your journey from Velana International Airport is the first decision. Resorts in North and South Malé Atoll are reached by speedboat, often in 20–45 minutes — ideal for short stays and late-night arrivals. Atolls further afield, such as Lhaviyani or Raa, are reached by seaplane or a domestic flight plus speedboat. The flight itself is unforgettable, but seaplanes operate in daylight only.
Match the atoll to your style
- Honeymoons and short breaks: North Malé Atoll — iconic resorts, great house reefs, minimal travel time.
- Diving: Vaavu and the central atolls for channels, sharks and mantas; a liveaboard lets you cover several in a week.
- Families: Raa and Lhaviyani for larger islands, kids clubs and calm lagoons.
- Value and local life: guest houses on islands such as Gulhi, Fulidhoo and Himmafushi.
Think about the season
The north-east monsoon (roughly December to April) brings drier days and calm seas, while the south-west monsoon (roughly May to November) brings more rain but excellent value and big-animal encounters in some atolls. Water temperatures stay warm all year.
Let a local DMC do the matching
There is no single best atoll — only the best one for you. Tell us your dates, who you are travelling with and what matters most, and our on-ground team will shortlist resorts and transfers that fit.
